The high court has finally agreed to uphold its decision to award Mecca bingo a £59 million VAT refund. It seems that Mecca Bingo overpaid their VAT between January 2003 and June 2008. The decision of the high court is much to the joy of Rank Group Plc who have been fighting hard for this all year. In addition there was also a further claim made by Rank for an additional £26 million in VAT which was also upheld.
The decision by the high court is a landmark decision for the entire UK based bingo operators who have all been fighting again high bingo taxes. Believe it or not, tax for bingo is at a whopping 22% whilst other gambling taxes are only 15%. The decision by the high court could actually cost the revenue so much more because now there are over 1,000 claims being made against them.
This has been very exciting new for UK bingo owners and there are sure to be more cases making the news headlines in the months and years to come and perhaps who knows the tax laws in relation to bingo and gambling may also have to be looked at.
